Officers from the Local Police in Córdoba have arrested a 23-year-old who, on Monday, allegedly knocked down a 7-year-old girl on a pedestrian crossing next to a school.

The suspect is also accused of driving a vehicle without consent, a van belonging to his father, and for not having a licence. Moreover, the suspect tested positive for cocaine at the time of the incident.

The incident occurred on November 26, when, at around 08:40, the emergency control room received a report of a child having been knocked down on a pedestrian crossing by a white van.

Several patrols immediately attended, where witnesses confirmed the reports and medical staff were treating the child in the road until she was stable enough to be transferred to the Reina Sofía Hospital.

The driver of the van was present at the scene and was subjected to an alcohol test, which was negative, although a drugs test proved positive for narcotic substances, specifically cocaine, and so he was arrested.

One of the witnesses stated that whilst waiting at the pedestrian crossing, two vehicles had stopped, and so people began to cross. The witness then stated that once on the road he saw a white van approaching at high speed. The van then overtook the two stopped vehicle, overtaking them on the left hand side, heading straight towards three girls on the crossing. Two of the girls were pulled to safety, whereas the third was struck by the van.

The police report indicates that the information given coincides with that of other witnesses who also report that the vehicle even continued beyond the crossing after the collision, stopping a few metres away.

Witnesses also state that the driver of the van attempted to restart the vehicle several times, eventually giving up, and then becoming detained by the people at the scene until the arrival of the police.

The child was recovering well in hospital and her injuries are not thought to be life threatening, a very lucky outcome of what could so easily have been a fatal incident.
