The secretary general of Penitentiary Institutions, Ángel Luis Ortiz and the rector of the National University of Distance Education (UNED), Ricardo Mairal, have participated this week in the solemn opening of the academic year 2019/20 held in the Penitentiary Madrid VII in Estremera.
1.150 inmates, according to preliminary data, have been enrolled in the Program of University Studies in Prison (PEUCP) born 36 years ago in collaboration with the UNED and Penal Institutions to respond to the needs of persons deprived of their liberty.
In the event, that also featured Enrique Collell, director of the Cabinet of the secretary general of Universities, the director of the CP Madrid VII, Enrique Valdivieso, and the vice-rector of Students of the UNED, Alberto Mingo Álvarez, authorities and students agreed on the importance of education for the fulfillment of the constitutional mandate of the reintegration.
“The training and culture will not only open doors in the labor market, but interior doors, teach us to better understand the world and, of step, to better understand ourselves,” said Angel Luis Ortiz. On behalf of the inmates replied an inmate in prison approved secondary school and just enroll in Business management and Administration: “education helps us to respect ourselves; the first step to respect others”.
The rector of the UNED praised, for its part, “the example of overcoming” of the students admitted in prison and commended them for “identify in education a tool for a new life.”
Law, Psychology and business administration
According to provisional figures, the majority of the students enrolled this year have opted for degrees in Law, Psychology and Business Administration and management.
In the course newly opened, in addition to 19 degrees of the 28 that has the UNED, the inmates may take the Course of Direct Access (DAC) for over 25 or 45 years, or do a test of Preacceso for those who do not have the title of Secondary Education.
In addition to studies at a distance, the UNED has advisors to 31 prisons, 37 tutoring in 23 prisons and 41 centers with the capacity to perform the tests starting in February. In the summer, like last year, will be put in place 14 courses in many other prisons of the General Administration of the State.
