There are few cities in Spain that live the basketball with the passion that makes Zaragoza. Hobby faithful who for years lived an orphan by the disappearance of the historical CAI –dissolved on the financial debts in the mid 90’s– and now has regained the smile after the successful reconstruction of the basket skill. Resurgence slow, but solid has been found in the direction of the sport of Pep Cargol pillar decisive to return to be among the best in the national basketball.
“There was a time not seen the city so excited about the team. Here the basketball is lived with a lot of passion and you have this communion between the team and the fans is something essential,” said Cargol ABC hours before the team faces today, the Students (12.30, Movistar+) in the Liga Endesa. Hence, the Casademont Zaragoza is third in the table, only surpassed by Real Madrid and Barcelona, which has defeated this season. It has been three decades that this did not happen, that speaks very well of the project started by Cargol just over a year and a half. After hanging up his boots, the Catalan was living in the aragonese capital, and brings twenty years as part of the club that took over the CAI after his disappearance. “Since I landed here I have been almost anything. Coach of the quarry, the equipment EBA, assistant and technical lead on the first computer… it Was almost two years ago when the president offered me to be sports director and, although it took me a few hours to decide, I ended up accepting because it was a unique challenge,” says happy, the sports director of the team that astonishes in Spain and walking with a firm step in Europe.
The adventure was not easy. It is not for any team CBA, as
the shackles of economic greatly complicate the construction of any project in the medium or long term. “The first thing we set was to spread to the public. That feel again identified with what they saw in the track and that is what we wanted to achieve giving space to players of the house and with a game idea cheerful and colorful. That’s why we are going for a coach like Porfi Fisac –critical to us– and we gave confidence to young people as Alocén, which are surrounded by veterans like Fran Vazquez, for that would help them to grow,” says the former player.
In his first season at the helm, the team was a semifinalist in the ACB after eliminating the Baskonia. Success that paved the way for the future. “Winning is important, but when developing a project has more stability and seriousness alone as a club. That makes the players want to come and that we can retain talent,” says Snail.
Happy with how things are going, do not lose the perspective. “We’re going day-to-day. We have the feet on the ground and we know well what our goals are. It involves searching the maximum in each plot, and from there to dream with ambition, but without ceasing to be realistic,” concludes the architect of this Zaragoza who dream without limits.
