As one particular fictional hotel is seen on the televisions of millions of viewers who enjoy a good laugh, nobody was laughing in Benidorm on Thursday when the streets of the town resembled a scene from a Hollywood blockbuster film, when a dramatic car chase left countless vehicles damaged and numerous people injured.
During a routine checkpoint set up by the National Police, the officers stopped a vehicle as part of their checks, only to find that the male driver decided to immediately race away from the scene, firstly driving straight towards to motorcycle riding officers, who had to jump off their bike before being mowed down, then continuing to attempt to escape along the N332 main road.
During the attempted escape, the high-powered car hit numerous vehicles, risking the lives of countless people, as the police gave chase in an attempt to stop the carnage.
After travelling along the road, the escaping vehicle crashed, head on, into another car, and was brought to a stop on the roadside. The driver ran from the scene, continuing to try to evade capture, but without success, as the officers caught up with him and arrested the fugitive.
A medical examination was carried out on the driver, who had suffered injuries in the crash, albeit minor, and several of the officers involved also had to be treated for the injuries they had received in the pursuit.
The driver was arrested and will be charged with assaulting the police and a crime against road safety, with other charges being considered. The license plate of the vehicle was found to be false and so a subsequent investigation has begun.
