The PSOE have called for a review of children’s playgrounds in the municipality, which they consider to be a priority of the government team in addressing some of the complaints made in recent weeks.
They say that after the summer lethargy the Orihuela government must now focus it’s attention on the lack of maintenance of green areas across the which have increasingly become the focal point of complaints as thousands of children descended on the region with their parents during the summer months.
Unfortunately the Psoe spokesman, Councillor Victor Ruiz, was only highlighting the districts and areas surrounding the city, el Raiguero, San Bartolomé, Hurchillo and Arneva, as well as the creation of new playgrounds in el Barrio de Los Huertos and el de San Isidro. He made no mention whatsoever of the Orihuela Costa showing that he is yet another politician who fails to acknowledge the importance of the coast.
He calls on the PP government to address the city requirements with urgency despite the fact that the facilities in and around Orihuela and it’s outlying pedenias are far better than anything we have on the coast.
In Aguamarina, stretching along the coast from Campoamor to La Zenia, which saw an influx of over 10,000 children during the holiday period, there is just one run down park that has been allowed to deteriorate to it’s present unacceptable state. For the children it contains just one child’s swing and one very tired slide. All of the other equipment has been broken and removed over a number of years with just the bare minimum of apparatus remaining.
The paths and kerbstones are worn and damaged, the rubber tiles are pitted and holed and despite the abundance of municipal teams maintaining council real estate in the city we rarely see any attention paid to the Aguamarina park, other than the infrequent emptying of overflowing bins.
Many dog owners allow their pets to defecate in the park, with absolutely no regard for the health of the children who play in the area, which is not just a huge annoyance, but a serious health hazard, since rain can drive this fecal matter into our water supply and increase the spread of diseases. There are absolutely no warning signs cautioning dog owners and there is certainly no evidence whatsoever of any concern by the authorities. Are they really bothered we ask……such signage is plentiful in the city.
Perhaps we could consider the introduction of a scheme similar to that implemented in Brunete, a small town outside Madrid, where the dog mess is first gathered up, then labeled “Lost Property,” following which a courier delivers it right back to the guilty pet owner, and where, since the campaign began, there has been a 70 percent reduction in abandoned dog waste. Not too shabby!
But back to the Psoe Councillor mentioned earlier who is also calling for improvements to the Garcia Engineer Park sport courts in Orihuela where the basketball hoops and the football goals are in desperate need of repainting. NOW THAT REALLY IS A PRIORITY SNR RUIZ!
